Volunteer Policy

  • An adult carer must accompany volunteers who are under 18 or a vulnerable adult needing specialist care and support, in accordance with the Railway Garden’s Safeguarding policy.

  • To abide by GTR’s (the Station Company Govia Thames Railway) H&S and Site Access policies, all regular volunteers working at the garden must complete a medical form and be named on the Site Access Permit.

  • All ad-hock volunteers joining for one off events or on an irregular basis must be accompanied by members who are named on the Site Access Permit. The regular members will give all new volunteers a H&S and site briefing before starting to help at the garden.

  • Volunteers will not be allowed to operate any specialist equipment (other than general gardening tools) without proof of proper certification and training.

  • Volunteers should exercise caution at all times. The garden has previously suffered fly-tipping and so ‘dangerous’ materials, such as glass might still be buried.

  • All Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing for gardening, which reflect the weather.

  • In particularly sturdy shoes and gloves must be worn at all time when digging.

  • Goggles should be worn if operating the strimmer. The strimmer should only be operated if you have been trained to use it and have fully understood the operating procedure set out in the manual.

  • Volunteering activities will be advertised via the website and on social media and any other appropriate medium.

  • Should volunteers require proof of their hours of work, the Garden committee would be happy to provide a letter of logged hours.

  • Volunteers must ensure they are familiar with the Crofton Park Railway Garden health and safety policy, risk assessment and method statements.

  • Volunteers should note that it is not guaranteed that a trained first aider will be on site during the session.

  • The committee is not liable for valuables going missing. Please leave valuables at home. Bags and personal equipment are left in the shed at the discretion and risk of the owner.
